If you are a history buff, a fan of architecture of all kinds, or just interested in the rich California sites, visiting the many old missions in this area is a good way to get your fix. One mission in particular was fortunate enough to enjoy relatively good fortune since its founding in the summer of 1797 and continues to be a place for its followers and clergy to gather. The San Juan Bautista Mission near SF, California is still an operating parish. That definitely doesn't mean you can't see traces of its amazing history in every building and garden on the property. As noted, the first work was started back in 1797 and included a main church, the Guadalupe Chapel, and the kitchen room. There were also several storerooms and a stable on the site as well. Now, the original church and chapel are still used and in excellent condition. Many of the other buildings are used for other purposes, but continue to be used by the parish or as tourist attractions.
The San Juan Bautista Mission, or St. John the Baptist Mission as it is known in English, is also the site of an old cemetery. Over 4000 Native Americans and Spanish missions are buried in this spot. While you are in the mission, be sure to visit the gift shop and the lovely gardens that are painstakingly cared for the maintenance crew of the mission. Whether you are church follower or simply interested in history, this mission is a great place to learn a little more about both.
