Asian Culture in the Heart of San Francisco

San Francisco is a sophisticated city with a diverse population. Cultures from around the world blend together here to create a unique ambiance, and these different cultures also thrive in their diversity in small pockets of the city. The Asian culture is among the most prevalent of cultures in San Francisco. You can experience this culture for yourself by spending some time in San Francisco's Chinatown and Japantown.

San Francisco's Chinatown

Chinatown is located along Grant and Kearny Street, and is a mecca of Chinese culture. The area encompasses eight city blocks, including two main thoroughfares. Here, you can find plenty of great shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions that will immerse you into the Chinese culture. You will know you have arrived at Chinatown when drive under a grand, dragon-crested Chinatown Gate. Beyond this, most of the business signs are written in Chinese characters, and the ornate architectural style of China will be dominant. Once in Chinatown, you will be overwhelmed by the savory aromas of Chinese cuisine from various authentic Chinese restaurants. Some of the great restaurants you can find here include House of Nanking, the Potsticker, and ABC Cafe. In Chinatown, you can also spend some time shopping at the many great markets and stores, where you can find everything from candles, clothing, carved Buddhas, and furnishings, to herbs and teas. Before you leave Chinatown, be sure to stop by the famous Fortune Cookie Factory for a tour and a few samples.

San Francisco's Japantown

Japantown is somewhat smaller than Chinatown, but is still a part of San Francisco worth visiting. You can find the three square block section of downtown known as Japantown located along Geary Boulevard and Webster Street, not far from Union Square. This gateway into the Japanese culture is a 'must' for a quick stop or a full day of fun. Take some time to enjoy the unique flavors of Japan at some of the many restaurants in Japantown, including Bushi-Tei, Ino Sushi, Izumiya, and many others. Shop for Japanese antiques, clothing, music and pop culture items, housewares and furnishings, and more at such fine stores as Genji, Amiko Boutique, Shige Kimono, and more. There are also several venues located in Japantown that are designed to promote Japanese culture including the National Japanese American Historical Society and the Ikenobo Ikebana Society of America. Indoor parking is available for Japantown at both the Japan Center Garage and the Fillmore Street Annex.
